Active Directory Installation Guide on Server 2019 Using VirtualBox 🌱

Configuring Server 2019

  1. Install Microsoft Server 2019 (Tutorial)
  2. Log in with an account with admin priviliges
  3. Set the server name
    1. Click the Start button > Type control panel > press Enter
    2. Click View By > Small Icons
    3. Click System
    4. Click Advanced System Settings in the top left
    5. Select the Computer Name tab
    6. Click the change button
    7. Enter the new computer name > Click OK
    8. When prompted to reboot, choose Restart Later
  4. Set a static IP address
    1. Back in Control Panel, select Network and Sharing Center
    2. Click Change adapter settings
    3. Right click on the network connection > Properties
    4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties
    5. Click the Use the following IP address option
    6. Enter a static IP address, subnet mask and gateway
    7. Enter DNS addresses
    8. Click OK to all open dialog windows and close Control Panel
  5. Reboot the server for the name change to take effect

Installing Active Directory

  1. After the reboot, launch Server Manager if it does not automatically load
  2. Click Add roles and features
  3. Click Next on the Before you begin screen
  4. Select Role-based or feature-based installation > Next
  5. Leave Select a server from the server pool selected and select the current Server2019 server > Next
  6. Check the Active Directory Domain Services box
  7. A popup will appear with additional required roles and features, click the Add Features button
  8. Click Next
  9. Click Next on the Select features screen
  10. Click Next on the Active Directory Domain Services screen
  11. Click Install on the confirmation screen
  12. Leave the installation progress screen open until the install completes

Configuring Active Directory

  1. Back in Server Manager, click the flag with the caution icon in the upper right corner
  2. Click Promote this server to a domain controller
  3. Select Add a new forest and enter the desired domain name, ie i12bretro.local > Click Next
  4. Verify Domain Name System (DNS) server and Global Catalog (GC) are checked
  5. Enter and confirm a Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM) password > Click Next
  6. On the DNS Options page, click the Change button and enter credentials for a local administrator account > Click Next
  7. Verify or modify the NetBIOS domain name > Click Next
  8. Leave the AD DS paths as default > Click Next
  9. Click Next on the Review Options screen
  10. After the prerequisite check completes, click the Install button
  11. Once the installation completes the server will reboot
  12. After rebooting, log back into the server
  13. Welcome to your very own Active Directory server
